The Philippine medical community was surely stirred as a season premiere of the soap, Desperate Housewives, unwittingly mentioned some kind of remark to the " med schools in the Philippines." Of course, the star, Teri Hatcher, is not to be blamed on it since she was just reciting some lines from a script. But for sure, the writer and even the producer of the show must possess some kind of belittling attitude towards Filipinos. Or shall I call it a "racial discrimination?"
I always thought that we are already free from this problem after Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther Jr. ' campaign againts racial discrimination and after Human Rights and Equality and for sure Americans are advocates of these call.
But then, my heart goes to my fellow Filipinos; not to mention the doctors that we have respected so much. If they, the doctors are belittled, how much us, ordinary citizens of this country?
Although, apologies have been expressed, yet the damage has been done and it could never be undone. Even if they would have to say a million apologies, but the impact of that harsh comments would forever be imprinted on every Filipino doctors and not just FIlipino doctors but their patients as well.
It's about time that producers of the shows must be sensitive in every line that they want to tell to their viewers. The Filipinos are no laughing stocks; it's not proper to use us as some kind of a joke.
Filipinos need more than an apology.
